My SkyScout displays an incorrect elevation. Why?
Answer Older versions of the Skyscout firmware have the ability to establish both 2-D (location) and 3-D (location plus elevation) GPS link-ups. The SkyScout initially requests a 2-D fix (which requires three satellites).  With a 2-D fix elevation would not be correctly displayed.

Every five minutes, when it tries for a new fix to update its location, it may end up with a 3-D fix if the SkyScout acquires another satellite.  With a 3-D fix, you’ll see an accurate display of the elevation.

SkyScout can function normally with either 2-D or 3-D fixes.

NOTE: Altitude is not available for display with current and recent versions (for example 1.30) of the firmware.
