Answer

An 11” SCT (or similarly heavy tube) with accessories may be at or beyond the limit of the stock mount’s counterweighing ability. There are a couple of things that can be done to help achieve balance.

First, you can unscrew the counterweight shaft by up to ¾-inch to give more of a moment arm for balance. The threading on the shaft’s top above the declination shaft’s fairing or bell is approximately 1-1/2”, so this is a quick and practical way to extend balancing capacity.

Second, an additional counterweight can be placed on the shaft.

NOTE: the CGEM counterweight shaft itself is the same as the Advanced GT (CG-5) counterweight shaft and it will take CG-5 counterweights.
