Answer While the EdgeHD will work as a terrestrial telephoto lens, it won’t be significantly more effective than a regular Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope design of the same aperture. Here’s why.

The EdgeHD design is primarily important where the focus is uniform across the field, that is, with a flat subject or one that is all at the same distance. This is certainly the case in astronomy where everything is at infinity distance. In such a circumstance, the EdgeHD delivers a flat, distortion-free image across the entire field.

In conventional photography, the subject – a bird or a landscape - is not flat. Since the subject is not at infinity, the edge of the field of view is at a different distance than the center. The depth of field in telephoto lens photography is very shallow and the focus is only sharp on the subject, normally positioned in the center of the field of view. So off-center parts of the image are out of focus.

Since this is just the opposite of the uniform focus optimal for the EdgeHD, its design advantages are unimportant for terrestrial photography.
