Answer

It should work. However, first generation iPads do not have internal compasses.

In order to use the iPad overhead pointing at the sky and having SkyQ move with the sky on the tablet’s display, you need to aim the iPad north and press “Enter” on the screen. You'll have to drag the sky to move it.
