Why is the sea level pressure important for my TrekGuide’s altitude measurements?
Answer The TrekGuide’s altitude is based on air pressure measurements made with the unit’s barometer. A barometer measures barometric (air) pressure, which is affected by altitude, the air temperature, humidly and weather systems.

To correct the TrekGuide’s barometric pressure for the effect of altitude only, you need to correct the indicated pressure to that your place would currently have if it were located at sea level. Sea level pressure is available from weather reports for your city or town. Usually such a report will just give it as the “barometric pressure.” A good source is the National Weather Service site.

http://www.weather.gov/

Once on the site, enter your city and state or just the zip code and look for the barometer reading under Current Conditions.

If you set a location’s known altitude and sea level pressure in the TrekGuide when your first get it, then it will give you the most accurate readings for both altitude and barometric pressure at other times and locations.
