NexRemote Control Software
Frequently Asked Questions
NexRemote Questions
Answers
Q:
It is difficult to center the alignment stars because the
keyboard doesn't reach. What can I do?
A: The optional wireless gamepad support
is the best means of controlling the telescope without being
tethered to the computer or hand control. See the "Optional
Gamepad Support" section of the NexRemote help for more details.
You could also use an extension keypad to access the arrow
buttons while at the eyepiece. Another option is to use the
direction buttons on the real hand control to center the
stars when performing the initial alignment from NexRemote.
To do this, you would run NexRemote and hit Align or Enter
in the software to begin the alignment process. When NexRemote
asks you to center the alignment stars, go to the real hand
control at the telescope and use those direction buttons
to center the star. Then return to NexRemote and hit Enter/Align
to proceed.
Warning: Please see the next question for restrictions regarding
using the real hand control at the same time as NexRemote.

Q:
Can I use the real hand control at the same time as NexRemote?
A: NexRemote is a complete software version of the Computerized
Hand Control. Using the real hand control at the same time
as NexRemote is exactly like using two controllers at the
same time and there are some restrictions about what can
be done. If you are unsure about using the real hand
control with NexRemote then we suggest that you only use
NexRemote
for all operations. Here is a table that shows what is possible:

the real hand control connected when NexRemote is used via
the PC Port.

Q:
Can I use the hibernate feature with the real hand control
and then "wake up" with
NexRemote?
A: No. NexRemote supports the hibernate feature, but you
must hibernate from NexRemote and then wake up from NexRemote.

Q:
I keep getting "Unable to communicate with Telescope" when
using NexRemote. How do I make it connect?
A: If you're having trouble connecting, please consult the
troubleshooting section of the NexRemote help by using the
Help entry in the system tray menu. Connection problems can
be caused by several things, including:
- incorrect cables or connections
- incorrect port settings
- incorrect firmware selected

Q: How do I use my planetarium software package with NexRemote? A: If you have Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, NexRemote
will allow you to connect your planetarium software using the
virtual port feature.
From the settings screen, the virtual port creates a new serial
port on you computer. When using your planetarium software,
you should configure the COM port to match what you've selected
in the virtual port. For more information, see the "Setting
Screen" section of the user documentation.
Note: If you do not have an operating system that supports the virtual port feature, you can use the NexRemote Direct option of NexStar Observer List to connect to NexRemote.

Q: How do I change the voice or obtain new voices for NexRemote? A: The speech system is built-in to your Microsoft Windows
operating system.
You can determine if you have speech installed by looking for
the Speech icon in the Windows control panel. The Windows control
panel also allows you to change which voice is active. If you
do not have speech support installed or you would like to have
the "Mike" or "Mary" voices, they can be
downloaded from: http://www.celestron.com/support/downloads/index.htm#NEXREMOTE

Q: NexRemote always shows the wrong timezone information. How
can I fix this? A:
NexRemote sets its time using your computer's time and
timezone information. Check the timezone settings on your
computer and
then re-run NexRemote.

Q: How can I get the wireless gamepad to use with my NexRemote Software?
A: Click here for a link to the info on the optional gamepad support.
Q: NexRemote won't recognize my gamepad. What can I do?
A: You should make sure you are not running NexRemote when
you insert the USB connector for the gamepad transceiver. Shut
down NexRemote first, then attach the gamepad.

Q: Will NexRemote work with my original NexStar 5/8? A: No. NexRemote supports the NexStar 'i'
Series, GPS, CGE, Advanced Series GT.

Q: Is NexRemote supported for the Mac?
A: No, there is not a Mac version of the NexRemote software.

Q:
I'm trying to connect my handheld GPS and it doesn't seem
to communicate with NexGPS? A: Select NMEA Output in your handheld
GPS settings menu.

Q:
After launching NexTour, no objects are displayed.
A: You may
need to install a newer version of MDAC. See help file.

Q:
After closing NexRemote and then restarting it immediately,
I sometimes get the message: Application already running.
What causes this? A: When NexRemote terminates, it can take a couple of seconds to fully unload itself from memory. Wait a couple seconds and then relaunch NexRemote.

Q:
Shortly after my rebooting my computer, I launch NexRemote
and get an error that it can't create a virtual port. What
causes this? A: In operating systems (especially XP), it can take several seconds for all of the device drivers to be properly loaded after a reboot. Wait until all activity seems to have settled before launching NexRemote.

Q:
When using NexRemote, sometimes when I try to use the PC
keyboard to control the scope, nothing happens. Why? A: The PC keyboard can only be assigned
to one application at a time. Try clicking anywhere on NexRemote
first to make sure it is the active application, and then
use the keyboard.
