Unless one has done their research, I do not recommend this as one's very first telescope. For those unaware, the tripod can be daunting, not to mention aligning the thing.
Aside from that, this is a great telescope! With the right patience and direction, you can see quite a lot. It is a treat to regularly see Juptier's moons, Saturn's rings, Venus's phase, Saturn's rings, and any number of extra-solar objects.
My one complaint is of the quality of the tripod. It works, I will give Celestron that. But, the plastic hinges make me nervous. Honestly, it seems a bit week considering the weight it is carrying.
One more thing... Buy an eye piece kit, as well. Your gazing experience will be much improved. (Posted on 3/27/12)
