Celestron's Frequently Asked Questions

NexRemote Questions

Answers

Q: It is difficult to center the alignment stars because the keyboard doesn't reach. What can I do?

A: The optional wireless gamepad support is the best means of controlling the telescope without being tethered to the computer or hand control. See the "Optional Gamepad Support" section of the NexRemote help for more details. You could also use an extension keypad to access the arrow buttons while at the eyepiece. Another option is to use the direction buttons on the real hand control to center the stars when performing the initial alignment from NexRemote. To do this, you would run NexRemote and hit Align or Enter in the software to begin the alignment process. When NexRemote asks you to center the alignment stars, go to the real hand control at the telescope and use those direction buttons to center the star. Then return to NexRemote and hit Enter/Align to proceed.

Warning: Please see the next question for restrictions regarding using the real hand control at the same time as NexRemote.

Q: Can I use the real hand control at the same time as NexRemote?

A: NexRemote is a complete software version of the Computerized Hand Control. Using the real hand control at the same time as NexRemote is exactly like using two controllers at the same time and there are some restrictions about what can be done. If you are unsure about using the real hand control with NexRemote then we suggest that you only use NexRemote for all operations. Here is a table that shows what is possible:

Activity
Connected Via:
Hand Control Serial Port PC Port
(see warning)
Align with real hand control No No
Hibernate with real hand control No
No
Use direction buttons to center initial alignment stars Yes Yes
Use direction buttons after Alt/Az alignment No
No
Use direction buttons after EQ North or South alignment Yes Yes

Warning: Although it is possible to use the real hand control in tandem with NexRemote as describe in the table, we do not recommend or support having the real hand control connected when NexRemote is used via the PC Port.

Q: How do I use my planetarium software package with NexRemote?

A: If you have Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, NexRemote will allow you to connect your planetarium software using the virtual port feature.
From the settings screen, the virtual port creates a new serial port on you computer. When using your planetarium software, you should configure the COM port to match what you've selected in the virtual port. For more information, see the "Setting Screen" section of the user documentation.

Note: If you do not have an operating system that supports the virtual port feature, you can use the NexRemote Direct option of NexStar Observer List to connect to NexRemote.
