Just a short walk from the Celestron headquarters in Torrance, CA, there’s a very special place that embodies a kindred passion for bird conservation and education: the Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center. Surrounded by dense multi-family housing and one of the nation’s largest shopping malls, Madrona is the last remaining freshwater marsh in Los Angeles County. Like much of Southern California, the land was once used for oil drilling and at one time, the soil was even coated with liquid asphalt to kill all plants and wildlife. But in the 1970s, a group of community volunteers began an ambitious project to restore the native flora and fauna to the area.
The Nature Center curates a natural history museum, art gallery, and myriad science stations for students and the community to learn about and enjoy nature in their own backyards. Celestron provides microscopes, binoculars, telescopes, and spotting scopes for the Nature Center’s labs, classrooms, events, and gift shop in the hopes of being a catalyst for the next generation of scientists and outdoor enthusiasts. Most recently, Celestron dedicated two benches and a plaque on the Marsh's popular "berm" that is perfectly situated above the most species-dense waters.
After decades of hard work and generous support from the city of Torrance, Madrona Marsh is a vivacious wetland teeming with life. Today, Madrona’s residents include a thriving swarm of honeybees, red-tailed hawks, gophers, foxes, coyotes, and skunk. More than 300 species of migratory birds, ducks, and geese flock to the marsh each year; it’s one of the few places they can seek shelter as they migrate along the Pacific Flyway from Alaska to Patagonia in South America. A smattering of native plants including hundreds of vibrant California poppies dot the landscape. Madrona provides a tranquil, natural space, not only for birds, but also for Celestron employees! You just might find a few of us relaxing there during lunch breaks.
We recognize that Madrona is a precious resource for wildlife and the community. That’s why we are proud to sponsor their important work.
