What power source should I use with my Celestron Mount?

There are many options that you would be able to use when it comes to powering your Celestron mount. The most common ways include batteries, Ac adapters, or PowerTanks.

each different method has its pros and cons.

  • Benefits; no cords to get in the way, they are quick and easy to install. Also, they don't require an additional accessory.
  • Drawback; Batteries don't always last very long (45min- 3 hours), depending on use, temp etc. You might have to replace batteries in the middle of a session, which would require another alignment procedure once replaced. There is also factoring in the cost of continuously purchasing new batteries to use.

Mounts that have the ability to use batteries include; (LCM, SLT, SE, SkyProdigy, GT)*

*not all mounts that use batteries are listed. These mounts either have a battery compartment, or use a small battery pack.

Ac Adapters; This includes both the 12v 2.5 and 5amp hour adapter (18778, 18780)

  • Benefits; provides continuous, reliable power.
  • Drawback; must be close to a power outlet. Cord is on the floor, so you would need to watch your feet when walking around the mount.

Mounts that would be able to use these will have a power input plug. Depending on the size of the mount you could go with either the 2.5amp and 5amp.

Recommended use with 2.5amp hour; LCM, SE, SLT, GT, SkyProdigy, CG-5

Recommended use with 5amp hour; AVX, CPC, CGEM, CGEM DX, CGE PRO.

PowerTanks; Includes both the Powertank 7 (18774), PowerTank 17 (18777)

  • Benefits; very portable, you would be able to take it with you to an observation site. You can also recharge them so you would be able to reuse the power. The PowerTank itself also comes with additional features that you would be able to use.
  • Drawbacks; They can be a little on the heavier side. There is the inconvenience of the cords that are needed to connect the PowerTank to the telescope mount.

While both PowerTanks provide 12v to your mount, the 17 will last longer than the 7 since it has a greater amperage. Similarly to the AC adapter, I would recommend using the PowerTank 7 with the LCM,SE,SLT,GT SkyProdigy, CG-5. I would recommend using the PowerTank 17 with the AVX, CPC, CGEM, CGEM DX, CGE PRO.
