New York Comic Con

Celestron's on-the-go team recently headed back out on the road and found ourselves traveling to the East Coast to attend one of the biggest, mind blowing, pop culture events in the nation – the one and only New York Comic Con!  This sixth installment of NYCC took place on October 13-16, 2011 in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.  Approximately 105,000 fans from all age groups, many of whom were fully dressed as their favorite characters, converged on the convention center's floors to immerse themselves with all the latest and greatest anime, cartoons, comics, gadgets, gaming, graphic novels, manga, movies, science fiction, space related toys, TV shows and a whole lot more.  Imagine that – four days of fun and excitement where being "geeky" was "IN" and everything else was just plain cool.

Being the astronomy and science fiction fans that we are, exhibiting at New York Comic Con just made perfect sense.  Marketing Manager, Michelle Meskill; Senior Art Director, Joe Kinsey; and myself, Marketing Communications Coordinator, Kevin Kawai, took on this new assignment and flew out to Gotham City.  We brought along a new outer space backdrop perfectly suited for this event as well as a wide range of fun, educational products we felt the crowds would enjoy.  It came as no surprise that our digital microscopes once again "stole" the show for Celestron as guests crammed around our booth for an up close look at currency, insects, arachnids, cells or anything else they dared put under our microscopes to explore and make discoveries. With attractive price points and ease of use, who knew using digital microscopes could be so fun yet so affordable?  Another popular draw was our telescopes that were used as background props in recent blockbuster movies and television shows.  We proudly displayed the CPC 1100, as seen in the movies Thor and Iron Man as well as a NexStar SE, as seen in the hit TV shows Big Bang Theory and Modern Family.  It's quite a thrill and an honor knowing that Celestron products are now forever immortalized in film.

Throughout the show, we were always on our feet interacting with guests and never had a dull moment or time to sit.  We passed out flying discs and catalogs until all our supplies were depleted.  During the event, we conducted free raffle prize drawings at our booth that proved to be a big hit with everyone who signed up.  Winners had to be present to claim many great prizes, including binoculars, an electric zoom spotting scope, a digital and optical microscope and the grand prize, a Limited Edition Anniversary FirstScope.  Congratulations to all our winners!

New York Comic Con was definitely like no other event we had exhibited in the past.  While we did meet a few people who already owned Celestron telescopes, many guests were unaware of the Celestron brand, let alone knew anything about all the fascinating products we had to offer.  It was quite a memorable experience to have characters such as Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Domo, Gumby, a Stormtrooper, Wonder Woman and countless other characters visit our booth with a sincere fascination to learn more and view the universe or objects here on Earth using Celestron products.  While many of those in attendance must fantasize piloting their own combat vessels to do battle with an alien armada in deep space, we were able to acquaint them with the instruments necessary to see the battlefield in which they dream about.
