Why does my FOV seem reduced when viewing through my Celestron Digital Imager?
When using a traditional microscope the light travels from the specimen through the objective lens, then through the eyepiece and then to your eye. In this scenario the final “light collector” is your own eye. With its’ 135° FOV, it is more than capable of viewing the complete stream of light from the projected through or reflected off of your specimen.
However, when replacing the microscope’s eyepiece with the Celestron Digital Imager, the final “light collector” is now the CMOS sensor embedded in the Imager. As you can see from the diagram below, not only is the CMOS sensor smaller than the diameter of the eyepiece tube, but it is also closer to the specimen, therefore it only captures a fraction of the stream of light travelling through the eyepiece tube. This, therefore, reduces your FOV.
