If you’ve powered on your Celestron telescope only to be greeted by a cryptic “Invalid Package ####” message on your hand control, don’t panic. It may look concerning at first, but in most cases, it is a simple issue and a sign that your telescope is just protecting itself. Let’s troubleshoot it together.

 

What is the Bootloader?

Think of the Bootloader as the “security guard” of your telescope's brain. Every time you flip the power switch, the bootloader wakes up first. It performs three simple but critical tasks:

  1. Checks for Updates: The bootloader checks whether you are trying to run the Celestron Firmware Manager (CFM).
  2. Verifies Integrity: It then scans all installed firmware to ensure nothing is missing or corrupted.
  3. Launches the App: If everything looks perfect, the bootloader hands control over to the main telescope application so you can start aligning.

 

Why Am I Seeing the “Invalid Package” Message?

If the bootloader detects an error, such as a failed checksum or a missing file, it refuses to launch the main application. Instead, it becomes “trapped” in the bootloader state.

On modern NexStar+ or StarSense hand controls, it signals this trap by displaying “Invalid Package” followed by a four-digit code.

 

How to Fix It: The “Clean Reflash”

The only way to release a trapped bootloader is to provide it with the healthy firmware it’s looking for. Here’s what you need to do to clear the error:

  1. Prepare Your Connection
    Avoid using USB hubs, which can cause data drops. Plug your hand control or mount directly into your computer’s USB port using a high-quality cable.
  2. Provide a Stable Power Source
    Ensure your telescope is powered by a steady 12V power supply. Low battery voltage is a leading cause of firmware corruption during the transfer process.
  3. Run the Celestron Firmware Manager (CFM)
    • Close any existing CFM instances and relaunch the application.
    • CFM is designed to find “trapped” devices. Even if your mount seems unresponsive, CFM should be able to locate the bootloader.
    • Let the process run completely. Do not disconnect the cable or power down until you see the Green Checkmark in the CFM interface.
