Moon Conjunctions with Saturn and Venus in 2025
May 20, 2025
In May 2025, early risers will be treated to two beautiful predawn conjunctions featuring the Moon, Saturn, and Venus. If you’re willing to set your alarm a bit earlier, you’ll be treated to these picturesque pairings — and maybe even snap a photo or two – before you start your day. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming conjunctions and how to make the most of them.
May 22, 2025: The Moon and Saturn Conjunction
On the morning of May 22, the Moon and Saturn will share the same right ascension, with the Moon passing 2°49' north of Saturn. The Moon will be 25 days old, a thin waning crescent glowing subtly in the dawn sky. Dave Eicher, from Astronomy Magazine, says, “Around 4a.m. local time if you head out, face east toward the rising stars.”
May 23, 2025: The Moon and Venus Conjunction
The very next morning, the Moon joins Venus for another early morning conjunction. Venus is incredibly bright this time of year, so you won’t have any trouble spotting it. The Moon will be just a thin crescent, passing about 3°59' north of the planet. Again, head out around 4a.m. local time to see this pairing.
Tips for Observing the Conjunctions
-
Set Your Alarm (Really Early)
These conjunctions rise between 3 AM and 5 AM, depending on your time zone. Yes, it’s early — but the calm, quiet sky will be worth it. -
Find a Clear View to the East
Since the Moon, Saturn, and Venus will all rise in the eastern sky, make sure your viewing spot has an unobstructed view in that direction. Avoid areas with tall buildings, hills, or trees that could block your line of sight. -
No Telescope Needed
The Moon and planets will be too far apart to fit in a single telescope field of view. Instead, use binoculars to enhance the view, or just enjoy the scene with your naked eye. Wide-field photography will capture the scene beautifully. -
Dress for the Chill
Even in May, the pre-dawn hours can be cool or damp. To make your early morning observing session comfortable, dress in layers, bring a blanket or chair, and maybe a warm drink. -
Capture the Moment
Snap a photo with your smartphone—or better yet, a camera with a zoom lens. Make sure to stabilize your camera to avoid blurry photos, especially in the low-light conditions before sunrise.
